LIFE IS A GAME

This animation was created in Blender by Калин Златански, a Bulgarian media producer and musician, and Athena Zhu. I was asked to create the sound design and mix for the animation.

Most of the design process was done during the mixing process. I made this decision because I felt that the sounds would not have benefitted from being not only individually designed, but to be collectively designed as well. Since this animation features two different animations linked together, I wanted to enhance the difference between them, still creating an audio transition which could link them together.

Perspective changes and camera movements have been recreated breaking down the automation in multiple stages. For the positioning and volume of the sounds a first layer of automation was written to the sound’s own channel, while a second layer was added because of the camera movement and distance from the source. Automation on Filters have been used as well to recreate the loss in frequency given by a distance source. Volume and panning automation both helped increasing the dynamic range and make the sound be less static.

The sounds for the dark-green pieces have been inspired by the Start Wars (Star Wars, 1977.) saga’s droids in order to enhance their apparent digital quality, whereas the sounds for the white pieces were designed in order to enhance comical characteristics. The design focused on differentiating the two groups as much as possible from a character point of view, but not so much from a movement perspective since they still pertain to the same category of objects.

ANIMATED BOOK TRAILERS

This project, ideated by the Cypriot Designer and Animator Haroulla Ellina, investigated how digital media can help the diffusion and promotion of an analogue media, designing different solutions to reinterpret the book and how we perceive it.

It has been a very exciting project for me to work on, where I curated all the parts of the production and post-production, from the recording of the voice-artist, to the editing, from the creation of the sound design to the final mix. I also had to create different versions for each trailer (two versions for three trailers in total), adapting the audio narrative from 30 seconds animations to up to three minutes animated videos.

SOUND DESIGN LIBRARY

During my studies at the University of Edinburgh, I have been asked to create an audio library for Sound Design purposes. This library has met high praises, as well as the example sound designs I created to show off its capabilities.

These designs have been described as "[...] engaging and well composed. They have depth and tension [...]". Moreover, on an expanded version of the library, the sound design was described as "excellent, and is a good representation of your design ideas. The stereo imaging and placement of sounds in space is engaging and adds to the tension."

Nowadays, this library has expanded, including all the sounds I have specifically recorded for their sonic characteristics and or usage.
